Tomii Cycles x SimWorks ‘Faraway’ Tire: An offering born through vision, patience and determination

“I hope one day I can leave these tire tracks in the Arizona desert…”

The first email I received from Nao Tomii contained those words along with his first sketch.
The moment I saw those words and the hand-drawn sketch, I had an intuition that we should create something together. It was like a strong impulse.

At SimWorks, we believe that creating great products is not just about developing a product.
We see it as layering together the scenery people have seen, the feelings they have felt while riding there, and the dreams that lie beyond.

The ‘Faraway’ project truly embodied that ideal.

The name is “Faraway”

Tomii Cycles × SimWorks × Panaracer
The Faraway tire is a collaboration between three companies. Each had to make contributions to the project over years of development to ensure we could bring this product to market eventually.

On paved roads, gravel, and even trails that might inspire you to take a spontaneous detour,
‘Faraway’ is a tire that will confidently push you forward when you want to ride farther.
We aimed to create a tire that would remind you of the meaning of riding itself.

Landscape-etched tread

The tread center has a detailed pattern that prioritizes smooth rolling on paved roads.
On the shoulders are cacti, canyons, and a full moon. The scenery of the American Southwest that Nao has seen is subtly but effectively engraved in iconic but minimalist form.

Faraway measure 700x40c. It is initially offered in two colors: Sand beige, reminiscent of dry earth, and Black, which blends naturally with any bike. It blends into the scenery of your trip, while leaving your own footprints behind. That’s the presence of mind we aimed for.

A little bit about what’s inside

The structure of ‘Faraway’ uses a new tubeless-ready inner layer developed by Panaracer.
It pursues a balance of flexibility, air retention, and durability, and is designed to be relevant for use on both paved and unpaved surfaces.

The tire is a fantastic balance between an ultralight thin casing tire and an overbuilt firm sidewall offering.
Finding that perfect middle ground required a series of detailed choices.
These are the elements of the development process that we aim to get just right.

The journey of making things is a journey unto itself

“I thought making tires would be a little easier(laughs),” Nao said, as the development team reached the halfway point.

How do we overcome manufacturing constraints while maintaining the originally conceived idea?
Tread pattern, logo placement, mold limitations, casing structure…
Even with all the experience SimWorks has accumulated, nothing was easy. These things take time.

Through the drawn out process, Nao remained positive.
He thought carefully, tried his best to come up with solutions, and repeatedly replied, “I’ll try to think of a good way to do it.”
I believe it was this adaptive attitude that helped create the perfect atmosphere that is embodied in this tire.

Leaving a mark

The Faraway is not a tire for tracing common paths.
I think it is a tire for marking the path you’ve decided for yourself.
It’s okay to turn back or take a detour.
Just make the path you’re on your own. Remember to keep focusing on that.

“I hope one day I can leave these tire tracks in the Arizona desert…”

It doesn’t have to be Arizona.
If that mark stays in your mind, and you see it through, then I think that’s the true meaning of this tire.
