Sycip Designs x SimWorks J.J. Bar

In another installment of the handlebar series we are developing together with Jeremy Sycip, a frame builder from Santa Rosa, California, we’ve revisited one of his earlier designs. After previously updating the JJJ Bar, we’ve now turned our attention to the J.J. Bar—originally designed as a handlebar for city riding—bringing it up to date with modern specifications.

Previously, the handlebar grip diameter was 23.8 mm, the traditional standard for road bikes. The new J.J. Bar uses a 22.2 mm grip diameter instead—the same as a standard MTB handlebar—making it compatible with flat-bar brake levers and thumb or index shifters.

The previous J.J. Bar was also innovative in that it allowed road brake levers to be mounted on a flat handlebar. With this update, however, it has been redesigned to better suit relaxed city commuting, making it a more versatile option for a wider range of city bikes.

When we work with framebuilders like Jeremy Sycip to create handlebars, we don’t simply produce one “ideal” bar and call it finished. Instead, we arrive at variations like the J.J., JJJ, and J.B. Bars.
This is not only because they are craftsmen who build a wide variety of frames, but also because they have a deep understanding of how to play with—and truly enjoy—bicycles. A typical manufacturer might take a single handlebar design and adjust it slightly—pushing it a little farther forward or adding a bit more rise. But builders like them have a much more refined sense of what makes a bike fun to ride, and those small adjustments alone aren’t enough to satisfy their curiosity.
At SimWorks, we do our best to respond to that creativity and bring those ideas to life.

Compare the Sycip J.J. Bar with other handlebars and take a closer look at the details. Then, if you have the chance, try holding one at a shop that carries SimWorks products. Those subtle differences will likely reveal a kind of enjoyment that never seems to end.
