【SimWorks by Panaracer】Safety Advisory: Tire/Rim Compatibility concerns

Dear SimWorks friends,

With the evolving landscape of available bicycle tire and wheel options, compounded with the difficulty in segmenting certain ‘road’, ‘mountain’ and ‘all-road’ categories and the inevitable blurring of those lines, SimWorks has found ourselves in the position where we need to provide some important advisories regarding the tires that Panaracer produces for SimWorks.

All currently offered SimWorks by Panaracer tires, including the recently released ‘Super Yummy’ 27.5×2.22 tire are produced to conform to the ETRTO standard. The ETRTO (European Tire and Rim Technical Organization) sets most standards for both car and bicycle tires and wheels, not just for Europe, but for the entire global market. Currently, the ETRTO standards are the only standards that exist for tubeless bicycle wheels/tires. They specify the G height, or distance between the top of the rim and bottom of the bead seat groove of the sidewall at 5.2 mm (for tubeless) and 5.5 – 6.5 mm (for tubes, depending on the rim width). The sidewall MUST HAVE A PRONOUNCED HOOK.

Rim manufacturers that have elected to deviate from these standards to offer specialized or proprietary products have done so while having to take in to consideration the difficulties presented with pairing standardized or ‘traditional’ tires with more ‘modern’ or ‘category-specific’ rim specifications. In some of those instances, the risks certainly outweigh any real or perceived benefits.

Tires separating from their rims is a serious and potentially hazardous or even deadly concern, and while we don’t wish to alarm any of our customers, SimWorks would like to stress, emphatically, that all of our tires should be paired and mounted to an appropriate rim. Important rim specifications should be provided on manufacturers websites, and in instances where it is not, it is advised to either ask a qualified service professional, contact a representative from those manufacturers producing rim and wheel systems, or take these measurements yourself with digital calipers.

Because of the risks inherent in properly mounting, using, and maintaining a complete wheel system, SimWorks will not be liable for failures related to improperly pairing our tires with insufficiently compliant rims, and in instances where inappropriate rims have been paired with SimWorks tires, all potential tire warranty claims related to instances of tires blowing off, sidewall failures and any other failures related to inappropriately paired products will be invalidated as well.

SimWorks wants all of our existing and future customers to enjoy our products as much as we enjoy bringing them to you. Please take the topic seriously and make your purchasing decisions with your safety and best interest in mind. We are happy to answer any questions related to tire compatibility, as with all of our products, but please do your homework before reaching out to us.

Thanks so much for your business and your considerations.
