Bicycle wheels are a topic that get discussed at length amongst individuals with a love for cycling, and an appreciation for the nuances that distinguish various products within the industry from one another. For experienced mechanics, and wheel builders especially, rim selection winds up informing a good deal of the capabilities and limitations that a complete bicycle will come to realize. Rider weight, carrying capacity, a range of preferred tire width considerations, and weight all come in to consideration when selecting a bicycle rim for a well executed build. For most of the bikes that we tend to prefer riding- which are often bikes that are ridden off road with at least a modest bit of cargo, a classic profile, box section, double walled rim is a requisite starting point for most builds. A stout extrusion of aluminum offers a structure that affords a durable, safe and long lasting rim that will take some abuse over the years, and not present problems for you if you find yourself many miles from home or a local bike shop, should an unplanned incident arise.

When SimWorks was discussing developing a line of rims of our own, we immediately reached out to Velocity USA to begin those discussions. Velocity has established themselves over decades to be a quality source of high quality, capable, durable products for a wide range of cyclists. Their products are produced in accordance with stringent quality and safety standards in the United States, where they also source their extrusions.

Velocity’s Cliffhanger profile had demonstrated many years of trusted use for many of us within the SimWorks family and it was a sensible foundation for us to develop our first Standalone product. The embellishment of adding an eyelet to this profile served to give the rim a more classic aesthetic, while in the process adding even more strength and longevity to an already bulletproof rim. We also loved that we had a lot of flexibility in finishing options in this rim, and that we would be able to offer it with both machined and non-machined sidewalls- as we feel a responsibility to continue to produce products for riders still using rim brake bikes.

The ‘ATB’ or “All Terrain Bike” is a foundational cornerstone for SimWorks. Many of our most popular and sought after products are designed and built to be included in your favorite ATB build. It’s the versatility and sensibility of this platform that keeps us coming back. You have a lot of options for how a bike like this gets built, and with a mix of modern components, it’s easier than ever to assemble a bike that you can ride almost anywhere, comfortably, and bring your life with you. The modern ATB’s provisions for racks and fenders, their ample tire capacity, neutral handling frame geometry and sturdy construction are the hallmarks of a sensible platform. And it’s on these bikes that we enthusiastically endorse the Standalone 001 as a great option to build a wheel set around.

Bronze is a color that SimWorks has embraced over the years, initially through our partnership with MKS on our pedal cages and their cargo cages.
