巻頭の特集はスポーツフォトグラフィの先駆けとなった写真家Gerry Cranham。

 

もともと陸上選手であった彼が写真家となり、とくに期待もなしに訪れたアントワープでの６日間レースで体験したものは、タバコと揚げ油とマヨネーズが混ざったような匂いの中、３つのバンドが交代しながら演奏し、人はケンカもせずにバーでビールを飲みレースを見る。オリンピックやモハメド・アリの試合、フットボールの試合、彼が経験したいずれのスポーツの場面にも比べようもない刺激的なものでした。

 

メカニックの指に挟まれ潰れたタバコ、トラック内に不器用に折りたたまれたコート、ライトに照らしださ れるライダーの顔などからはその雰囲気が私達にも伝わってくるようです。

 

彼のコレクションはヴィクトリア・アンド・アルバート博物館に写真としてはissue34で特集されたアンリカルティエ・ブレッソンについで二人目として展示されています。
